Peter Morrens | OEEEEEEUUUUVVRE at Museum M (Leuven)

11 OCTOBER 2024 - 2 MARCH 2025

Peter Morrens brings his multifaceted oeuvre to M. His work includes paintings, drawings, photographs, installations and performances. Language, sound and image converge in his practice, in which knowing and not-knowing are inextricably intertwined. With disruptive humour and often searing images, the artist questions the things around him. His work is both playful and generous. It questions a wealth of conventions and prejudices, which lends it a provocative and contemplative character.

Peter Morrens takes the basic materials of his work from an array of visual sources. These range from existing images in various media to his own snapshots. Morrens selects, translates and edits these images and texts, enlisting them as ‘jammers’. Central to his choices and presentations is his fascination with how we experience time. Subverting expectations, breaking the rules, and sensuality and fetishism are also key themes. Morrens invariably plays with rhythm, and with rest versus restlessness, in his work.

M’s exhibition ‘OEEEEEEUUUUVVRE’ not only rises to the challenge of looking back at an extensive and explosive oeuvre spanning thirty-five years, but also offers a place for new work. The result is a total installation that forges links with other artists and with M’s collection. It aims to look at both the past and future and to open up new perspectives.
